POTREBUJEMO:

  • 50 g 100% bombažni garn*(več spodaj) velikosti 3 – 3,5 v poljubni barvi
  • kvačka št. 3
  • škarje
  • potrpljenje in delno znanje kvačkanja***

POSTOPEK:

    Untitled-1
  2. 3 verižne pentlje, 19 šibičnih pentelj – združimo v krog2krog
  3. 3 verižne pentlje, *2 šibični pentlji v naslednjo zanko* (*ponavljamo do konca*) – združimo v krog2krog (2)
  4. 3 verižne pentlje, *2 šibični pentlji v naslednjo zanko, 1 šibična pentlja v naslednjo zanko* (*ponavljamo do konca*) – združimo v krog

Štirkamo predvsem bombažne in lanene garne.

CROCHET COASTERS

I have been thinking a lot about what to give to my friends and family for Christmas lately, especially considering that Christmas holidays are getting closer and closer. I try to make the before-December time count, and so I always spend it making something, whether that something are gifts or Christmas decorations. I get extremely addicted to the feeling of creating something from scratch that, for instance, last year I made all my home Christmas decorations, a door wreath and also homemade Christmas presents for all my close ones.

This year was the same. I was thinking really hard about what to get my family and friends for Christmas and what to create so the gift will be practical for them but also not expensive for me. So I got to the conclusion that this year I will be making crochet coasters.

What is crocheting? It is a process of creating a fabric with yarn, thread, or any other material strands using a crochet hook. When crocheting we are »hooking« strands with the crochet hook and creating different loops. People who love crocheting will definitely hold a grudge against you if you don’t know how to separate knitting form crocheting. They are two very similar processes, but still so different. When we are crocheting we use one tool. That is a crochet hook – that is actually shaped as a hook, while when we are knitting we use two knitting needles that are straight with thinner ends. Crocheted fabric is usually more compact and not stretchable comparing to knitted fabric. That is why crocheting is a more practical technique when it comes to creating crochet coasters.

  6. *1sc in to the ch loop, 6dc in the loop, 1sc in the loop* (*continue with all other loops till end*) – join, bind off, cut the yarn and weave in ends.
  7. Some people soak the coasters in the corn starch/water mix (**check notes at the bottom of the post) It makes the coasters stiffer. I used the bought mixture.

Of course I quickly arranged my crocheted coasters into a present. Beside them I also placed some fruit tea, tea filters and a tea mug into the gift bag. I believe this makes a simple and cute gift that can easily be used in any tea party or during a coffee break. Hope that you try it out.

*I believe that cotton yarn is the most apropriate yarn to use when creating coasters. It’s easy to clean in the washer and not slippery on the table. I also tryed crocheting coasters with wool but I do not recomend it.

**Starching the fabric is common when creating crochet napkins and doilies. Usually we starch crochet things that are made from cotton or linen. Some people use a mix of corn starch and water, spray it over the fabric and leave it to dry, or soak it in the mixture of water and corn starch and leave to dry. The important part is that you leave the fabric to dry on a flat surface. That is the only way the fabric will keep its form. I usually dry them on a towel on a desk.
When they are almost completely dry, I iron over them. Not directly. I use a cloth I put over the coasters. It’s a really good thing to do when creating things like coasters.

***The easiest way to learn how to crochet is watching videos on the internet. I recommend the site Dropsdesign, where you can find a lot of basic crochet patterns. You can find the instructions for the basic loops we used with the coasters on following links:
